ANCIENT ROUTE TO BOLULLA CASTLE

This is a beautiful walk along  the old mule paths from Bolulla that supplied the Castle.
While surfaced roads reach almost to the col below the Castle it is well worth tracing the old path which is now cut by tracks and roads but there are still four well defined sections of mule path to enjoy and the intervening stretches of road are short.
At the col below the castle is the start of a there and back walk to castle on fairly rough path (where one can be found) well worth the trip at least once.
The return to the bar Era includes tracks and a mule path through pine woods.

DISTANCE 7.3km WALKING TIME 2-3 hrs ASCENT 325-500 GRADE E - M(with Castle)

BOLULLA - MORRO BLAU CIRCUIT

An arduous walk that starts at Bolulla with a steep climb up a surfaced road offering fine view of the village. A little known old mule path continues the climb up to Foia Selles where spectacular views can be enjoyed. A short decent into the Barranco del Negra offers a little respite before climbing steeply once again to arrive just below the summit of Morro Blau.

A short track walk followed by a no path, find your own way down, to below the Serra del Raco Roig. Fine views of Bollua Castle can be enjoyed from the path to El Collada. The walk ends with a relaxing walk down to Bolulla on sections of old mule paths.

BOLULLA AREA CIRCUIT

This is a beautiful walk which combines the old mule paths from Bolulla (that supplied the Castle and areas beyond) with a higher level circular walk. Both of these shorter walks can be done separately.

While surfaced roads reach almost to the col below the Castle it is well worth tracing the old path which is now cut by tracks and roads but there are still four well defined sections of mule path to enjoy and the intervening stretches of road are short.
At the col below the castle our route follows above a barranco until reaching a peaceful fertile valley and the return to the col has fine views of the Arc dels Xaeguet and the Sierra de Aixorta.
The return from Point A to the bar Era includes tracks and a mule path through pine woods.

JOCHEM'S BARRANCO (BARRANC DEL SACANYAR DEL XARQUET)

This barranco walk requires good physical condition and is not for people who suffer from vertigo. For this walk we left our car at the foot of Bolulla Castle at the end of the paved road. From the car we walked up the track which passes between a nice stone house and a ruin (which is for sale if anyone fancies a fixer upper). We continued along this track keeping left whenever the track divided. After about half an hour we arrived at some bancales. Hear we look for a dry river bed to our left, a little overgrown, the beginning of the barranco. A five minute walk along this river bed and we arrived at the first obstacle which has to be overcome - a steep waterfall.
It takes some pathfinding skills to find the way up and over this steep drop. It looks impossible but it can be done. We took the right hand side , the scramble tested our nerves but was not too difficult.( Not recommended for vertigo sufferers).Once back down in the barranco the fun begins. There are lots of lovely scrambles all with great hand and foot holds. The river bed rocks are white and have been carved and smoothed by the torrential water flows. Hopefully the water will continue to do its job and keep this amazing barranco clear of vegetation for us walkers to enjoy. There is one other waterfall to bypass that requires a scramble up a steep cliff and down a slippery embankment, another test of the nerves. The barranco takes about 3 hours to walk and ends in a lovely peaceful valley planted with almond trees. From this point we have taken two different routes back to the car both equally pleasant to walk. One route can be found to the left of the riverbed and follows the hillside overlooking the baranco. The other can be found on the right hand side of the riverbed where there is a track that leads to a flashed trail (Y/W markers) on the far left side of the valley. This trail takes us through a gully with a stone arch and then cairns guide us back to the car.

ANCIENT ROUTE TO BOLULLA CASTLE

While a surfaced road reach almost to the col below the Castle it is well worth tracing the old mule paths from Bolulla that supplied the Castle and areas beyond. This old path is now cut by tracks and roads which were probably built over it but there are still four well defined sections of mule path to enjoy and the intervening stretches of road are short. Point „B‟ provides an excellent stop on olive bancales where shade and shelter can usually be found. From here 10 minutes up the track to the col and then a scramble of 3 0 mins gets you to the ruined Castle. As always the views in this area are superb in all directions, and the option of returning to point „A‟ down the road frees your eyes to enjoy the scenery. The return from Point A to the bar Era includes tracks and a mule path through pine .
